Donations are changing cancer care as we know it

Roswell Park proudly stands at the forefront of innovation in cancer care, bringing the latest breakthroughs in treatment options to patients faster than ever — and it’s all thanks to the generosity of donors who make critical research possible.

The most promising discoveries start in the lab as a simple idea about how to prevent, diagnose or treat cancer.

That idea turns into comprehensive research.

Promising research eventually expands to reach the realm of clinical trials. After rigorous, years-long testing, successful clinical trials reach patients across the globe and eventually become a new standard of care.

The Scientific Advisory Committee

Every day, researchers at Roswell Park ask new questions and think of new possibilities for treating cancer. These new ideas have the potential to bring about more effective, less invasive treatment options, especially for difficult-to-treat cancers. That’s where Roswell Park’s Scientific Advisory Committee, fueled by donations, comes in.

Each grant is funded 100% by donations. Without donor support, these projects could not get off the ground and leave their marks on cancer as we know it.

How the Scientific Advisory Committee works:

The Scientific Advisory Committee opens an opportunity for grant submissions.

Roswell Park researchers submit research proposals, each one looking to investigate a new idea that will address novel ways to diagnose, treat or prevent cancer.

An objective committee of their peers convenes to review and grade applications.

After a thorough, competitive and rigorous process, the Scientific Advisory Committee announces grant recipients.

Clinical Trials

Only the most promising research reaches the realm of clinical trials. Clinical trials are conducted as a final step in the research process to determine how a potential new therapy works in people. All medicine and treatment options currently used as standard of care were once studied in clinical trials.

Clinical trials can be expensive, but funds raised through the Roswell Park Alliance Foundation keep them moving forward through three phases, each of which can span years. Alliance Foundation funding is critical to advancing breakthroughs until they reach a stage where larger investors can step in.
