Caregivers Connect emphasizes self-care for caregivers

Seven adults pose indoors holding matching tote bags with a tree logo. Six stand in a row, one kneels in front. Shelves and wooden cabinets are in the background, creating a warm, casual setting.

If you’ve been on an airplane, chances are you’ve seen the signs warning you to put on your own oxygen mask first. This guideline holds true for caregivers, too, especially caregivers of those going through cancer treatment. Thankfully, a new program at Roswell Park aims to care for the ones giving care — and it’s all thanks to the support of donors like you.

Caregivers Connect is a new program that’s fully funded by donors through Roswell Park’s Quality of Life program. Conceived by Resource Center Manager Rebecca Colville and spearheaded in partnership with Senior Resource Center Coordinator Theresa Bonito, this program is designed to nourish the mind, body and spirit of caregivers.

“Caregivers play an essential role in the healing journey, and this initiative focuses on providing them with resources, education and emotional support to help navigate the challenges of caring for a loved one. By investing in patient caregivers, we not only improve their experience but also enhance outcomes for the patients they support.”

A Whole-Person Approach that Extends to Caregivers

Roswell Park believes in treating the whole person. This extends to a patient’s support system. Caregivers are often on call for their loved ones and put their loved one’s needs before their own. Long days with few breaks, coupled with the emotional challenge of seeing a loved one in treatment, can take a toll. Providing caregivers with a space to connect, recharge and manage their own care can strengthen a caregiver’s resolve and allow them to better support their loved ones.

Caregivers Connect meets the second Wednesday of every month at The 11 Day Power Play Cancer Resource Center. It is more than a traditional support group.

A group of seven adults stand around a table in a meeting room, looking at items on the table. The room has wooden walls, a green door, and chairs with pamphlets and a potted plant on a nearby table.
A smiling child with glasses and a bald head hugs an adult woman with curly hair and sunglasses on her head. Both are wearing black shirts and appear happy and close.

With learning opportunities, uplifting talks and resources specifically tailored to caregivers, plus hands-on activities like crafts and skill-building workshops, this powerful program allows caregivers to connect with others who understand their journey. At the same time, the program aims to provide a space for self-care, strengthening caregiver resolve and resiliency.

“Many step into the caregiver role with little notice or preparation, often placing their own well-being aside as they focus on others. Caregivers Connect brings caregivers together to honor their dedication and resilience and celebrate the meaningful work they do each day.”

You’re Shaping Stronger Communities!

Thanks to the generous support of donors like you, Roswell Park has funded 51 Quality-of-Life Programs for 2025-2026. Each program supports patients and their loved ones beyond the scope of physical treatment — from transportation needs to mental resiliency and diversionary activities.

Your donations make a meaningful difference in the community, building stronger support systems to help our patients during their cancer journeys. We couldn’t do it without you!
